Pathology Lab Processing and Diagnostics

Pathology lab test results determine the cause and nature of diseases and help doctors diagnose and treat our patients correctly at Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists.

Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists offers the convenience of a pathology lab, which allows for testing of body tissues (samples from biopsies) and fluids (such as blood). Typical services and tests include needle aspirations, fungal cultures, and bacterial cultures. Results of tests performed in the pathology lab aid our physicians in diagnosing and treating patients.

A biopsy involves removing a small sample of skin, nail, or soft tissue so it can be examined under a microscope. This is often used to identify conditions such as skin cancers, chronic fungal infections, or unusual lesions on the foot. A needle aspiration uses a thin needle to withdraw fluid from a cyst, joint, or soft tissue mass so the fluid can be analyzed for infection, crystals (as seen in gout), or other abnormalities.

Fungal and bacterial cultures help identify the specific organism causing an infection, which allows your provider to select the most effective medication rather than relying on general treatment. This is especially useful for stubborn toenail fungus, wound infections, and cellulitis that has not responded to initial therapy.

If your podiatrist recommends pathology testing, samples are collected during your office visit and sent to the lab for processing. Once results are available, your provider will review the findings with you and outline the appropriate next steps for treatment.

Why On-Site Pathology Matters

Having pathology services connected directly to a podiatry practice offers several practical advantages for patients. Rather than coordinating with outside labs and multiple facilities, samples collected during your appointment can be processed through a streamlined workflow, which often shortens the time between testing and diagnosis.

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective foot and ankle care. Many conditions can appear similar on the surface. A discolored toenail may be a fungal infection, trauma, or in rare cases something more serious. A persistent skin lesion could be a wart, callus, or an early skin cancer. Lab analysis removes the guesswork and gives your provider objective information to guide treatment.

Pathology testing is also valuable when a condition is not improving as expected. If a wound is not healing, an infection keeps returning, or medication does not seem to be working, cultures and tissue analysis can reveal underlying factors that would otherwise go unrecognized. This allows your provider to adjust the treatment plan based on evidence rather than trial and error.

Before any biopsy or aspiration, your provider will explain what the procedure involves, why it is being recommended, and what to expect afterward. Most samples are collected in the office in just a few minutes, and any post-procedure care instructions will be reviewed with you before you leave. Once results return, your care team will contact you to discuss findings and plan the next phase of your treatment.
