FAQs

What conditions do your specialists treat?

Our podiatrists treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including:

  • Ingrown toenails and fungal nail infections
  • Persistent heel and arch pain, including plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle sprains, fractures, and tendon injuries
  • Bunions, hammertoes, and other structural changes
  • Ongoing diabetic foot monitoring and wound care
  • Complex foot infections, deformities, and structural injuries to the foot or ankle

We recommend scheduling an evaluation for any persistent foot or ankle symptom, as early diagnosis often allows for simpler, more effective treatment.

Can a podiatrist help with foot pain caused by sports activities?

Yes. Sports-related pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek care with us. Rather than addressing symptoms alone, our specialists evaluate gait and biomechanics to determine the underlying cause, whether that involves overuse, structural imbalance, or an acute injury. Treatment may include:

  • Custom orthotics designed to correct the specific imbalance identified
  • A physical therapy program to rebuild strength without increasing injury risk
  • Guidance on modifying training or activity levels
  • Bracing or taping to provide additional support during recovery

An early evaluation typically results in a more straightforward recovery.

What should I expect during my first foot and ankle evaluation?

Your first visit generally follows this structure:

  • A detailed conversation about your symptoms, including when they began and how they affect your daily routine
  • A physical examination assessing range of motion, tenderness, and swelling
  • Imaging, when your provider determines imaging is necessary
  • A clear treatment plan, explained thoroughly before you leave

If you have prior imaging or medical records related to your condition, bringing them to your appointment can help your provider develop a more informed treatment plan.

Do you offer non-surgical treatment options before recommending surgery?

Yes. Surgery is considered only after less invasive options have been explored. Our specialists commonly recommend:

  • Custom-molded orthotics for structural support
  • Stretching programs and structured physical therapy
  • Non-invasive treatments such as shockwave therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory injections for tendon or joint irritation
  • Footwear adjustments tailored to your foot type

Because we manage care in-house from diagnosis through recovery, patients who require surgery are not referred to outside facilities for the remainder of their treatment.

Can I get a second opinion on a foot or ankle condition or proposed surgery?

Yes, second opinions are welcome for both diagnoses and proposed surgical procedures. Our specialists will review your existing imaging and medical history, perform an independent evaluation, and discuss any additional treatment options that may be appropriate.

Do you accept my insurance, and how can I confirm my coverage?

We accept most major insurance plans, including but not limited to Anthem, Aetna, Blue Shield of California, CalOptima, Cigna, Medicare, Memorial Care Medical Group, Mission Heritage Medical Group, Providence Affiliated Physicians (Mission), Providence Health Plan, St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group, Tricare West Region, and United Healthcare. Since coverage details vary by plan, we recommend calling our office ahead of your visit so our team can confirm your specific benefits.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Most patients are seen within the same week, with same-day appointments frequently available. A referral is generally not required to schedule a visit. For urgent concerns, such as a sudden sprain or an inability to bear weight, call us for immediate availability options so you can be evaluated promptly.

Do you provide on-site X-rays?

Yes. Nearly every Artisan Foot & Ankle Specialists location is equipped with on-site X-ray imaging, allowing your exam and imaging to be completed during a single visit. Occasionally we will need to direct patients to a nearby facility for imaging.

How will I receive my diagnostic test or imaging results?

Your results are shared securely through your Patient Portal as soon as they are available. We then schedule a follow-up appointment so your provider can review the findings with you and discuss your treatment plan in detail.

How often should I visit a podiatrist?

Recommended visit frequency depends on your individual health and activity level:

  • Generally healthy adults: an annual visit, especially if you already use orthotics
  • Patients with diabetes or circulation concerns: at least once annually, often with closer monitoring for higher risk individuals
  • Active patients: an annual biomechanical evaluation can help identify issues before they lead to injury
  • Acute pain or a new injury: we recommend scheduling a visit promptly rather than waiting

Since same-day and same-week appointments are typically available, there is rarely a reason to delay care.
